How to find out where my Vehicle was Registered

If you’re wondering where a vehicle was registered, then there is a way to find out. The first port of call should be to the DVLA. When contacting the DVLA you will be able to find out registration details or your own vehicle. You can also find out the registration details of another vehicle, if you have reasonable cause to do so. Examples of reasonable cause are:

  • Finding out who was responsible for an accident
  • Locating the registered keeper of an abandoned vehicle
  • Locating the registered keeper of a vehicle that is parking on private land
  • Issuing parking tickets or PCNs
  • Issuing charge notices for trespassing
  • Locating people who have driven off without paying for goods or a service (such as fuel)
  • Locating people that you suspect are committing insurance fraud

If a private car parking management company issues a parking ticket or trespass charge notice, then they can only request registered keeper details from the DVLA if they are a member of the British Parking association or International Parking Community.

How to request information on where a vehicle is registered

To request vehicle registration details, you can fill in a form and send it to the DVLA by post. If you’re an individual, then you will need to use a V888 form. A company that issues parking or trespass notices can use a V888/3 form. If you are enquiring on behalf of a company that does not issue parking or trespass notices, then you can find out information about a vehicle on a specific date. To do this you need to fill in a V888/2A form. This request will provide you with the name and address information of the keeper. To request other information such as details of the insurance company, you will need a V888/2B form.

How to request information about you or your Vehicle

You can ask the DVLA for information that they hold about you, your current vehicles, and a vehicle that used to be in your name. It’s completely free to do this, and all you need to provide the DVLA with is your full name and current address. If you wish to request information about your vehicle, then be sure to inform the DVLA of:

  • Your full name
  • Your current address and the address on your V5C logbook
  • The registration number of the vehicle concerned
  • What information you need, such as when it was first registered or the date in which you purchased it.
